10 on 1 method

Some of you have already posted this as a separate blog entry. That's fine. I am providing a space where you can respond to the question on the syllabus. What do you think of the 10 on 1 method? Have you found it beneficial?

  1. The ten on one method helps to analyze a text by finding more than one meaning to a word. It also helps to ask certain questions about a line, and to dig in depth to its meaning. The method to me is complicated to do because it takes a lot of practice to analyze a poem, so that you can form a interpretation with details that can be manipulated into many forms. These details can be confusing most of the time which is good, but it depends on how you can reconcile two different ideas. The method is some what beneficial; however, it takes me a bit longer to apply because I'm so use to developing an interpretation through details with one meaning. Eventually the method starts to work, and it becomes easier for a person to analyze a poem by part. The ten and one method is a multiple process that allows you take in poem with details along with questions that soon form an interpretation to a poem as a whole. It also helps you to start writing a paper. Diction, structure and other literature component that an author uses brings in question a person mind, and when we notice these details we begin to build on many inferences with this one complex component.

    1. Why do you think it is good for the detail to be confusing?

    2. I agree with you on the method leading into more than one word. It's like, the 10 on 1 method gives you an entire story And I like how you the state literary devices that help trigger the questions for this method.

  2. The ten on one method is really beneficial for deep thinking. This method allows a person to really decipher a text. When looking at one word and finding multiple interpretations it opens up opportunities for analysis. When using the ten on one method for multiple words in one text, it can lead to connections which then lead to conclusions. Sometimes this method could be a bit challenging, but it is also an exercise of opening the mind to multiple possibilities. In the terms of deep and through analysis I think that the ten on one method is very useful.

I find the 10 on 1 method to be extremely helpful when I attempt to interpret something such as a poem. I think it is an excellent way to take in every last bit of detail and it has taught me a whole new way of looking at pieces of literature. Before attending this class, I had never experienced looking at literature on such a deep level of thinking. I like how with this method you focus on one specific piece and just gather details on it. You then do this for every detail in the whole piece. Although it will take quite a bit of time, this method allows you to take in every bit of detail and not miss anything. It is very important to look at every single detail and think about it in every way possible. This makes it so when you reflect on the poem as a whole, you don't miss anything. If you did not use the 10 on 1 method and just looked at the poem it would be very easy to mis interrupt. Without the 10 on 1 process it would be extremely easy to become narrow minded and not see the whole picture. This is the main goal of the 10 on 1 process. It is used in order to force someone to see the whole picture and take in everything. I do think it is an extremely effective process and I plan to use it when interpreting works of literature in the future.

    1. I agree with you when you say it has given you a new way of looking at literature. When you use this method you never miss any details or different understandings of a phrase or word. Does it help you be more aware of literary devices like diction and personification? Or the tone the author is using?

  4. The ten on one method is the best way for me to understand any text . From a image to a poem etc. It helps me focus on one detail and expanding my ideas into deeper thought. Not only by helping me broaden ideas but by finding the true meaning to a text. It helps identify why the author put this specific word or phrase in their work. I'm not really good at reading between the lines and thinking outside the box like Mr. Rivkin LOVES to teach but this method has really helped me find true meanings and purpose of a text. Taking my time to realize why each detail is there gives me a better view of the whole poem.Even though it takes a while to just focus on one, write about it and then realize something else that matches up, it has helped me describe my ideas better through writing.

I found the 10 on 1 process quite interesting and a new beneficial way to explore writing pieces. I have used this process in a poem. What were beneficial were the techniques that were used to analyze that poem. Instead of diving into the poem and searching for a general message, the process asked to look for phrases and words to make only immediate inferences, not interpretations. This was helpful because it made it the lines more tangible for me to get a better sense of what was being explained. This first step was a very logical approach that did not need make analogies or describe symbolisms. This process interested is because of its simplicity of identifying familiarity and making clearance on phrases or words. This process really made me realize that it is essential to determine the basic inferences in order to have a general sense before making connections to form interpretations. On the other hand, this method did cause disturbance because of the process of distinguishing between inferences and interpretations. It was challenging to determine what would be assumed logically compared to what would be determined instantly by common interpretations. Because of my repetitive method of deciphering symbolism, interpretation has become habitual for me. Interfering with my process of distinguishing logical immediate interpretations. This 10 on 1 was a challenging process that involved myself to detach from my habitual process of always finding symbolism.

  6. I think the ten on one method is a very logical process for extracting details and then analyzing them so that you can make an interpretation of the piece. I do think that it is a better way to analyze pieces rather than the boring 'read then write' method that most of us have been using all along. The ten on one method allows me to get various perspectives on the subject. What I may not have originally thought through the reading is introduced to provide me with a new outlook, constantly. The only downfall to this method is that, I never know when I am done! You're pulling out details and extrapolating some kind of meaning to it, but then it can rise a new meaning and a new one and so on; thus, making this process tedious. I assume that we’re never done analyzing the subject, we just decided to stop. Well then, what if I missed some other type of meaning? It’s these concerns that make me hesitant to do this method on my own because I am always worried that I am not doing it right. Nonetheless, I must admit, this method does keep me on my toes when paying attention to literary devices like personification and diction. I am notorious for always asking my teachers “why?” so I feel that I can resonate with the endless ‘why’s that come along with the process- why is it that the author decided to say this word here or capitalize this word etc.

    1. I found it quite interesting that you had unique problem of when you knew you were done using the 10 on 1 method. By the couple poems that we have gone over using that process how did you end looking for inferences or later interpretations?
In my opinion it is very hard to be done with 10 on 1 process because you are suppose to be able to find logical inferences and then being able to further branch out from them too.

    2. I like the way you notice how this method helps you notice the literary devices. It also helps me find the tone the author is trying to use. I also feel the same way with the negatives about this method. I never know when i'm done, or even worst I never can keep getting more than three details on a significant detail.

  7. When analyzing such works as poems as we did in class several times, the 10 on 1 method is the best way to interpret the text without missing any details or meaning. The 10 on 1 method, as its name suggests, is used to think of as much meaning to a small piece of text as possible. For example in class when we were analyzing and deciphering poems, we would spend an extended amount of time noticing very precise details and connections between lines of text, forcing us to really think and delve further into the text itself. The notice and focus method that we used in class before had us do the same thing only with pictures and paintings. Although it is the same principle, I think the 10 on 1 method is more strenuous because in pictures it is easier to find meaning or to make connections, the physical connections are already there. Using the 10 on 1 method in a group, we also got the perspective of the same text from multiple people, helping us develop structured thoughts. And although the process is sometimes tedious and long, it really helps me structure my thoughts and influence future thoughts processes. I think the 10 on 1 method is the most convenient method we have used so far.

    1. Yes!
A few weeks ago we looked at the poem "To David, About His Education" by H. Nemerov in class.
It begins "The worls is full of mostly invisible things," and later says, "grown-ups ...see invisible things." He used the word "invisible" in the context of education. At first we were at a loss to explain what he was getting at, so we used to 10-on-1 process to think specifically about the word "invisible".
We considered different definitions, connotations, contexts, and possible metaphorical meanings.
The 10-on-1 Process requires taking apart a particular part of a text, perhaps using it out of context, playing around with it, exploring the detail of the individual part, and then drawing conclusions that can then be supported by all the thinking you've done.
We accomplished that really well with the Nemerov poem, I thought.

The ten on one method is a really good way to analyze a text in small sections, thus getting more out of the details than trying to interpret the entire message of a text. If you focus on a single detail and interpret it ten different ways, you have more leads to follow as you continue interpreting the text. Once the text is pulled apart while following this method, the different interpretations can be pieced together, almost like a puzzle, to form one large, complex idea from the text. This method allows the text to become deeper and more thoughtful as it is interpreted further. I find this method to be very beneficial. Since there is no right or wrong answer when interpreting texts, many different conclusions can be found from different ways of thinking about the text. The 10 on 1 method is also very helpful when discussing a fragment of text in a group of people. When large groups of people discuss their ideas about the same text, not only can there be different answers from each person, but the same people can rebound off of each other’s responses, creating even more ideas in ways that would not be expected to come from a single person. This method creates a complex sphere of ideas that is ever-changing and growing as more information is added to it.

  10. The 10 on 1 process is a great method used to find more than one meaning of a word or line. It helps me get a deeper understanding and supports but sometimes complicates my interpretation of a piece. It helps me see a word usage in many different ways. It helps you not miss any details or meaning because you're not limiting the potential evidence. It takes time because you're thinking of every possible meaning of a word or phrase but it helps you not limit your thinking to one thing. At first I found it hard and difficult to explore a word for so many different meanings but then I found it beneficial. It helps me be more aware of literary devices like diction and personification. It helps me find the tone the author is using. When you notice different meanings you’ll enhance your thinking skills. The 10 on 1 process is like the notice and focus method but with more explanation and thinking. You need to think more out of your understanding and think of many possible meanings.

  11. I feel the ten on one method is a method that will allow you to analyze a text without forgetting important details. The ten on one method will allow you to build upon one phrase to understand it and deepen the meaning of something, i.e.: a poem. This method is good for the sense of breaking down text you are not familiar with because you interpret then infer. This method does take patience to deal with. You can start with something complicated and end up with hundreds of ways to describe that once complex thing.
For example I can tell someone about the chemistry of life. The first question would be “if the world is made up of elements, why isn't a pencil on the periodic table?”. It would be explained that that pencil is a mixture, and within that mixture there are compounds within the mixture, within those compounds there are elements, within those elements there are atoms that the human eye cannot see without a microscopic device, within those atoms there a subatomic particles such as protons, electrons, and neutrons. That is one way that the ten on one method works. You get deeper and deeper into something and expand your understanding of one simple thing.
The ten on one method will allow you to learn, expand, read between the lines, infer, and interpret and much more. The method is one that should be taken step by step or it will be pointless to begin with.

  12. The ten on one method does have a significant effect on how you analyze pieces of work. It is beneficial when analyzing work because it allows and requires you to pick up each piece in text and explore the meaning. The ten on one method does not need to be ten on one it can be one hundred on one but it is a good method when reading and trying to understand the meaning of something. The first method we had done, the four step method, was more for breaking up work and noticing all aspects of it. Ten on one is very helpful when trying to go in depth on a detail to truly analyze work and come out with a greater meaning of some sort. this method helps with breaking down something you cannot easily analyze and assists the reader in interpreting the text then drawing inferences. The ten on one method can be very helpful because, like in class, we focuses on one thing and began to draw other things from that and really analyzed the piece of work thoroughly.

  13. I think the ten on one method is very helpful in getting as many different points of perspective as possible. Since this method requires the viewer to interpret any detail in a multitude of ways, the number of different possible interpretations of the poem as a whole increases as well. This allows me, personally, to look at a work of art/literature from a variety of aspects, and after interpreting each details multiple ways, it is much easier to make meaning from the work and back up my interpretation of the work. This method will definitely be beneficial to me in analyzing works more in depth.

  14. The 10 on 1 method is very useful for developing an analysis that is well rounded by details and perspectives. By following this method, I am reminded to consider interpretations of a piece of work that may contradict my initial conclusions and change my opinions. When applying the 10 on 1 method to literature, a reader's experience with a piece is more enhanced than it would be if the same piece was read with a familiar examination process. The 10 on 1 method asks viewers to observe possibilities they may originally disagree with or deem infeasible. I have noticed more depth in my writing since utilizing the 10 on 1 method in my analysis.

    1. Anastasia,
I agree, the 10 on 1 method makes you think of a more creative way to seeing things. It also makes you push aside initial urges of connecting to familiarity by instead making you think of the details in a new way.

  15. I thought that the 10 on 1 method helps me better analyze a text because it makes me focus on part and dig into that rather than trying to find meanings for the whole text. At first I was confused about the method because I thought we were not supposed to focus on a single part of the poem but examine all the details. I see now that as we focus in on one part of a text it is helping us reveal more about the text as a whole instead of just the part we focus one. When using this method I find that I am able to draw more ideas and also ideas that counter conclusions that my brain wants to make. This helps me because it forces me to think more and come to many different meanings. I think that I am able to reveal more about a text since I started to apply this process in other texts.

  16. The best way to analyze a piece of work, especially a poem, is using the ten on one method. The ten on one method causes you to think deeply and break down a word or phrase in order to find numerous interpretations, which ultimately makes for a better discussion. For example, in class we used the ten on one method to analyze Howard Nemerov’s poem “To David, About His Education”. We chose to analyze and break down the phrase invisible things, where we came up with several interpretations on how the phrase was used and what it represents. I found this method to be beneficial because everyone was able to contribute their ideas and build off of each other’s responses. When writing an essay using the ten on method it may be very tedious and take a while to complete, however, it helps in the long run by making your essay stronger with various interpretations and easier to refute a counterargument.

  17. The 10-on-1 Method -

I value this method because of its flexibility. Depending on the material I'm looking at, the amount of time I have etc. the 10-on-1 Method can morph to the 1000 - on 1 method.
It's an effective tool to keep in mind when brainstorming. I focus in on 1 detail, and can draw from that as many things as I want.
I enjoyed doing that in class last week with the poem "To David About His Education" By Nemerov. We looked at the one word "Invisible" and were able to draw out the facets of the word, its connotations, and possible inferences for several minutes. This is an exceedingly valuable tool to have as we get into more complex and lengthier analysis papers.
Using this concept to focus in on the miniscule also gives a paper more bredth. My interpretation can be more solid when using this method as a guide.

The 10 on 1 method we used in class is a technique used to decipher a reading for an analytical conclusion. In particular, if there is a reading being synthesized is it helpful to split it up into smaller sections. Dividing a reading into small parts allows for a closer look of each individual section and then details can be better seen ensuring that none are missed. When we looked at a poem in class the stanza division was a good way to see separate sections. Once we had the sections, we took in as many of the details as possible. We categorized words that fell into similar categories. Once we felt each section had been analyzed, we were able to interconnect the paragraphs with analyzation. Doing this makes a complete, cohesive final analysis of the poem. This method is time consuming when done the right way. If there is time taken to complete the method the right way it will result in detailed and thorough answers. If the method is done in a sloppy and quick manor then the analysis will not be a complete one. In a way this process reminds me of the Notice and Focus method because in both methods there is the involvement of scouring the text for specific details. Where they differentiate seems to be that 10 on 1 requires a more delicate look into specific details. There is more attention to detail and smaller separations in the text for examination.
