The Rebirth
When I look at this picture the first thing I notice is the setting. The sky is dark and gloomy which creates a depressed gloomy scene. Next I notice that there are not many people around. But the most obvious object there is an egg. Inside the egg is a man escaping. He looks as if he's hatching into a new world. The egg is cracking and his feet and knees are bulging through while he tries to escape. There is a drop of blood coming from the crack which symbolizes pain and struggle. On the egg are shapes that look like continents on the globe. The man is placed on North America which has to symbolize something, I'm not quite sure though. Noticing the year this painting was painted, 1943, I believe it may have something to do with World War II. His hand looks like he is grabbing or crushing something, England. South America and Africa is enlarge, which must represent their importance.
There looks like a tear drop is dripping from one of the continents which symbolizes pain.Standing next to the egg is a woman and a child. The woman is pointing at the egg and the baby is grabbing her knees and looking. The baby looks afraid and seems to be hiding behind the woman's legs. Also I noticed that the baby's shadow is taller than the woman's. This might symbolize that the baby's fate is in this new man's hand, theoretically speaking. He must be in control of the baby's future in the world. I named this picture The Rebirth because it's obvious this man isn't a baby so he's rebirthing. Also because i feel he represents something new and he's coming into into a new world.
Your conclusion is very similar to mine . I didn't notice until now how the child's shadow is much taller than their mothers. You said it can mean fate but you explain it in such a negative way since you feel it's taking control of the child's future but cant this shadow also mean a positive control since he is rebirthing into something new and positive to the world ?
