Maggie Thomas_Homework #4_Blog #2_Starry Night Representation

What does the painting Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh to me represents community. The way the painting revolves around cooler tones makes it seem that it’s not warm, but really it is. The way the town clusters by the mountainside makes it cozy, like the people built the town to be closer to one another. The mountain that stretches around the town feels more like a shield or a wall than a mountain. And the stars and the moon are the most important part of the painting. They have a glow about them, not just because they’re stars, but also because they emit warmth. This represents the warmth of the town, and the warmth represents closeness and love.  This painting to me may be of a cold starry night, but the feeling that is emitted from this painting is warm and loving. The painting has a feeling of community.

Then again, many would say it has an air of mystery. The mysterious dark shape on the left of the painting provides questions about what it is. Many think it’s a tree, or a steeple, a bush, and many more theories float around. But I don’t think what the shape is important. It’s simply the fact that the mystery surrounds it makes it interesting. Then there are the swirls in the sky. Some say it’s clouds and others say it’s the wind. Whatever it is, both items in the painting make it mysterious and strange. In a way, the two themes could go together, love and mystery.

  1. I like what you said about the painting protraying a sense of mystery and totally agree because of the color choice and strokes of the painting.

  2. I agree with the point you made in your second paragragh on how the dark shape gives the painting a sense of mystery since it is unclear what it is. The mysterious object leads to questions and discussions.
