Aliya Clunie_Starry Night Promt_Blog#2

Starry Night by Van Gogh represents the beauty and works of nature. When looking at the image closely, it doesn’t look as calm and subtle as it does from afar. The harsh strokes and movement that Van Gogh uses reminds me of a storm just getting started. When looking at the sky there is a large gust of wind that swirls and it seems to be moving to the right, and it looks as if it’s almost taking away the starry night. All the brighter stars are caught up or almost caught up with the gust of wind and if the picture was moving the stars seem like they would disappear. When looking into the gust of wind I can see shades of yellow which are now moving and mixed up with the wind and if the wind were to move it the sky would get darker. The small specks of black forming around the sky seem to reveal a dark background behind the blue which might be a result of this storm that is forming. Another detail that reveals the wind moving to the left is the tree, it is slightly tilted to the left and the brush strokes gives the tree a push that could be from the wind that is blowing it’s way.
This painting portrays the importance of light. The sky lights up the whole scenery, even though some houses in the town have their own light, without those lights I think the night sky would still make them visible. Without the light from the stars in the sky it would be hard to really notice any detail in the image. The light brings out everything and without there would be nothing to infer or interpret because we wouldn’t be able to see. This image has a lot going on, but without the starry night we would never be able to tell.

  1. I like how you came to the conclusion that the painting showed how light is important. Light is something very simple and people don't always see how it benefits living. You illustrated this detail very well.

  2. I agree with Kate when you brought up the importance of light. It is a resource us humans take for granted, but in reality, if it were gone, us humans would not be able to survive. I also somewhat agree with your idea of how the harsh strokes telling us there is a storm to come. Think about it, however, if there was a storm going to happen would there not be more signs of a grayish color? We've all witnessed this image in person, the night sky, and if a storm were going to appear there would be signs. For example, more wind, and not as much light. There is never much light in a storm.

  3. I like what you say about the dark feeling when you look at the picture. I too felt the same way when looking at it. Perhaps the reason we felt like this was because it was the most relate able thing. It was something we had seen before.
