The
notice and focus method is the best method for analyzing and describing images
and text. When you notice and focus you eliminate the chance of assuming, and blacking out
important factors. When you notice and not focus you misinterpret things. For
example the Starry Night image, if I looked straight at the dark thing growing
from the ground I would have just thought this is a tree near a town at night
time. When you only notice the importance of focusing is forgotten. Focusing is
the way to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
Focusing
without notice is just as bad. You focus one detail but black out everything
else. In this case I would have looked at the wind/cloud in the sky and assume
it was wintertime. The notice and focus method allows the consumer to view the
image and see every single detail, and use prior knowledge to make an educated
assumption as to what the message of the image is. The notice and focus method
helped me better understand the picture because I did not assume something with
no facts to back it up.
As I
was younger I did not use the notice and focus method but after taking challenging
courses in high school I learned to open my mind to all details. In my English class
last year, my teacher asked us to debate on the topic of immigration. I went in
ready to argue for the pros of immigration but she told us we did not have the
choice. Therefore she made us write and affirmative and negative speech for the
debate. I ended up debating for the pros of immigration but knowing the
negatives gave me an advantage because I had facts and details from all aspects
of it. This is an example of the notice and focus method in my life.
